View Full Version : Anybody seeing any mallards?
12-31-2002, 05:43 PM
This is the worst second season that I have ever had!!!
I have gone out 5 times since last monday and have not seen a mallard since then! Being seeing tons of geese and a few black ducks here and there but have not seen any mallards! If it weren't for the decoys - I would have forgotten what they look like! Usually we are not over run with them but it wasn't a problem to shoot one or two everytime out(if not at least seeing a pair or two) - this is season NADA!
Anybody else noticing it or is it just around my area?

I saw a couple belly up in front of my blind this morning. Are you calling to loud or rocking around when you call? hehehehe Hope you had a good new years eve, also I hope you find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow next time out. By the way we still have sarcasim here in Pa. even if we don't have any frigin' birds. :BRG:

We saw six belly up in front of us this morning. One even had a band!!!It was my buddy Bills first band. After 20 years he finally got a band.We had to get off the beatten path to find them.Used 7 decoys, one whith a jerk cord.As soon as we saw them we gave a few tugs on the cord and some soft feed chatter and drake Mallard calls.Had 5 flocks commit and 6 never left.Hope ya find some birds.

Killed 15 mallards and blacks combined today, but they are tough and a alot less birds here in CT. Didnt see many birds but made it happen with the ones we did see. As far as I am concerned the birds are through the NE.

ME ME ME ME ME.OH DID I FORGET TO TELL YOU ME ME ME ME ME :wak: PM ME FOR SOME LATE SEASON SHOOTING IF YOU CAN MAKE IT.

Ducksbane- I have to agree with you - I think their are some birds still lingering but most are already thru NE - went out and scouted and did find several small flocks but again - not what I have seen in the past. Think the early freeze pushed the birds down alot earlier than normal.
Pete S - that is great news for your buddy - I hope he at least took some pics - sounds like a great way to start the New Year! I too use the duck on the string, but with all the water - its hard to use in on the river set up that I usually use- besides - its doesn't do much use if nothing is looking at it!
Going to give it a try on Saturday - then I head down to AR to hopefully end this Non-Mallard Slump!!!!!

Went out this morning with two other guys we shot 12 green heads and 6 geese, saw lots of birds can't say much more than it's been a great year 2002-2003 so far, to bad it's slowly comming to a end but there's always late season GEESE, that's when the fun begins.

12 ducks and 6 geese - sheeeesh - that's an awesome day!!!! Send a cripples UPS to me in a box so that I can at least let them go so that my dog has something to retrieve!!!!
Well - I guess I'm going to have one more shot at it Saturday - going to have to do some heavy duty scouting Friday- if I don't find any birds - I guess I'll just bring a poster of Quack Addict so that I can see what a real hunter would look like!!!BWAAAHAAA!

Went out this morning by myself, first light had 30 mallards dump in didn't shoot next group about 8 birds 3 drakes stayed, i worked a few flockes in and out of the dekes taking pictures shot one more drake out of a pair , furthest shot 20ft with 20ga #4 . Decided to what for the geese by the time i poured a cup of coffee a group of 5 of in the distance honked there comming started double cluckin then they were locked up over the dekes I could have grabbed a bird, just before there feet hit the water 2 stayed for a floating lesson!!
But over all saw, still lots of birds i had a drake pintail drop in the dekes saw LOTS of GEESE i think it's going to be a great late season.
Ha, Bones i'm with you with that idea on the cook out during the summer exchanging hunts, calling tips, etc, let me know if i could be any help!

That's an awesome day for a young dog! Nothing like keeping him in birds to keep his intrest up!
Well - due to the snow - it looks like my season is over! Was planning on going out tomorrow with a buddy north of Boston for the last time before i leave for my AR trip on Wed., but with the roads all nasty, I guess I'll have to settle with watching ESPN2 in the morning! It just ticks me that I have to end the Ma season on a crappy note! GRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!
Anyway -I have to be in the Taunton area monday afternoon for a meeting - maybe I'll keep my eyes open to watch for falling birds and Know your back at it Tim!!

I woke to rain not snow headed out the the farmers corn feild set for ducks and geese with three of my buddys got the FA blinds set for us aswell as the dogs had a cup of coffee and waited didnt take long. Rain changed to snow and the skys open up with ducks and geese we couldn't decide what to shoot first the ducks comming in or the geese well we shot at the ducks first then finished with geese, the dogs were constitly out of the blind and my self was calling between ducks and geese just non stop action. Finally had a low for 15 min maybe to take a (leak) NO WAY 7 geese came in quite right the dekes, it ways a awsome shoot everyone shot right on the money all shot up close and personal that's the way i like it!!
