When do you think it is the best time to ween a litter, I have heard that you want to wait as long as you can so you don't have the mess but is it bad to wait too long, I think we use to do it at like 5 weeks does that sound right, it has been too long.

Pups are getting big

5 weeks sounds good to me. I may be wrong on this one, but I think that the people that I got Jubilee from said they weened their pups at 4 weeks, maybe 4 1/2. I would wait until 5 weeks if it where me.

I can't remember the exact date but we started weening them when their teeth started to really come in and mom was starting to suffer. When her teats started to bleed and she would get up when they wanted to nurse we knew it was time. We pretty much just let the bitch tell us when it is time for the pups to start getting real food.

In that context it applies to a lot more than weening but is pertinent to all of life. :Deb: :Deb: :Deb:

I think they are getting ready because My dog doesn't want to feed them at all, course I don't blame her they go after her like they will never eat again

The milk will dry up in her teats after she has stopped nursing. They will not totally go away for a month maybe. After the pups stop nursing they will start to go down after a week or so. Be carefull because she will start squirting milk everywhere until she stops making it. Hope this helps, not an expert by any means.

thanks that helps, Cause you can tell when she needs to nurse cause they get filled looking and then after a feeden they saggy, I am ready for them to go down so I can start working with her again.

well I didn't have to worry about it, at 4 weeks the little suckers weened themselfs. Came home and they were in moms dog bowl, So I bought them some puppy chow and they have been munching away and drinking water as well. Smart little guys.
