View Full Version : Wood carving problem

I started painting on a cedar bird that I had carved tonight and (doing washs) was working on the chest. After the second wash I noticed that the growth rings started showing up big time. By the time I had finished putting the 5th and final wash on, the growth rings were so dominate that I could hardly see the texturing that I had done. I sealed this bird with Jo Sonya's sealer, let it sit for a week and then primed it with gesso.Let it sit with the gesso on for 2 days. You could not see the growth rings until I started painting. I know water will raise the grain but should'nt the sealer have prevented that? Is there anything I can do (besides sanding clear back down) to fix this or am I just screwed????

This is the first cedar bird that I have done, everything I have done before has been basswood, and I have never had this problem before.

I always use a lacquer sealer before the gesso.:Rich:
