View Full Version : Got to go where the birds are

12-06-2003, 07:53 AM
I just got back from Sandy Pond, which is on the east coast of Lake Ontario. We were three guys and we filled our limits on ducks and geese three days in a row. Thsi was great considering that 24 hours prior to leaving, we had no idea of where we were going to go.

We arrived to NY around 3PM and we started scouting the birds.

We found the birds in an inland marsh

Geese and ducks were flying in large flocks. The migration was on and the cold front was moving in. When we arived at the launch in the morning, we were greated by the deafening honks of the geese flying overhead. Line after line of geese filled the sky.

We put out a rig of 50+ duck decoys.

12-06-2003, 08:00 AM
We didn't have any geese decoys with us since we thought that gthe geese season was closed. It didn't matter........we called them in.

12-06-2003, 08:02 AM
they landed right in the spead and we filled our limits without any trouble

12-06-2003, 08:04 AM
The third day we filled our limits by 8:30AM. The ducks and geese were raining in. We couldn't retrieve them fast enough.

Here is the haul from the first 2 days

day three

Days 4 was cold. Everywhere was iced over. We pushed out and made a hole in the ice but it iced up fast. The temperature was in the single digits with a 30 MPH wind.

Gotta go where the Ducks are!

I could not agree with you more!

If person has time & can afford it - from Sept through end of Jan
there is always some place Duck & Goose hunting is GOOD.
Starting Sept in Canada and till end of Jan here in States - different Flyways and States same holds true.

Its just how much time & effort you put into it.

Watching weather - cold fronts - when & where Ducks or Geese will be moving into area - BEST time of all - being there when new birds arrive and for week ten days. WORST time after birds have been around long enough they learn the game and when they are ready to be moving on-out.

GREAT Pictures & Super Trip
Thanks for sharing - I can almost put this one in book as being there with you!

AGAIN lot effort-scouting good equipment paid off = GOOD TIMES

DD.....I like the SWAT a lot. It worked well both for ducks and geese over decoys. I bought the combo and I will be using the Supreme for the late goose season.......Peter

That's a really great photo series. Good job! Congratulations on the hunts. It looks like you're all missing the same gene as the rest of us. You know, that little gap in our DNA that tells us going out in windy, sub-zero weather to shoot ducks is fun!! We're not normal, but we're always having fun. Here's to many more posts like that:cool:
