View Full Version : "X" Marks the Spot

Well, we decided to drive up to the Finger Lakes area of NY to find the birds. CT is dead. We hit the jackpot. The weather was 35-45*F. Winds light and variable. The ducks were flying.....

The day before we found a spot on one of the lakes where the birds seemed to like. We launched 3:45 the next morning and set the spot

We set 2 about 60-70 duck decoys in 2 bunches with a hole between the two.

Around 30 minutes after we finished setting the rig, another duck boat pulled in, and started setting a large spread 150 feet from us. About 40 minutes later a large pontoon boat joined then with 5 additional shooters. About the same time, another guy was setting up 200 yards to our left. The competition was on and we were on the "X"

As the sun rose so did the ducks. The weather was overcast, and this morning was darker than the usual. First we saw flocks of redheads coming into the rig and we bagged a few. The guys in the surrounding rigs were being outcalled by us and resorted to shooting at incredible long ranges. Surprisingly they did bring down some birds...?? heavy shot

Latter a nice flock of broadbill flew into the spread in a nice compact formation. Ducksbane called the shot and we plastered them.....downed seven
The dogs were working overtime to bring them in

another retrieve

Later a pair of mallards flew into the spread, we downed both but one dove to try to get away. The dog went out on a long retrieve and eventually swam down the duck. It was a great site to see

We soon saw what that bird was trying to steal from us.................A BAND!!!

Overall it was a great trip. Well worth the 5 hour drive. There is nothing better than sitting 8 hours in a boat chatting with some good guys and killing ducks

We ended up shooting a 6 man limit the first day by noon.

Great post love the photo of the Lab with the snow beard (I have an old BLF with snow on the face also). In one photo there are houses in the background are they occupied during duck season??
If not the owners should look into rentals to Duck Hunters!!
Great hunt and thanks for posting up another great photo essay..
