Well , I like the # 1 steel shot and it is getting harder to find. I heard from one dealer Rem. is going to stop making them.
Has anyone else heard this? And if so, why do you think so?
I shoot a SBE, and still use the factory chokes, I know old and out of date, but it shoots well for me. It does pattern #1 and #3 best..

You think #1 steel is hard to find, you should try to find #B. #B is my favorite steel size for geese. I shoot them at 1600 f.p.s. out of my 10ga. and it just crunches them. I have to buy it in bulk and reload my own. These two sizes are not very popular but they are great pellets for geese. I havent heard that it will no longer be available from Remington. Dealers probably do not purchase it because it is not a good seller. If I were you, I would give Kent Fasteel a try. They have a 3-1/2" 1-3/8 oz. load #1 @ 1550 f.p.s. and a 3" 1-1/8 oz. load #1 @ 1560 f.p.s. Cabela's sells them by the box or case at very reasonable prices.:wak:

I didn't even know they made a #B! I tried a few boxes of 3 1/2" #1's last fall and really liked them as a combo hunt load. It folds the mallards and geese both very well, with no swapping shells back and forth on a busy mixed hunt. I'll be disappointed if #1's get discontinued.

I have been looking at the Kents, i have read good and bad about them. The dealer said the 1's did not sell as good.
I use the 1's for a combo shot too..
I have heard that the factory choke do not pattern well with the high speed steel shot.

I love the Kent #1s. That's all I use on geese. Piles them up, even late in the season.

I liked the #1's on late season mallards. It would be dissappointing to see that load go.

Fast Steel #1's are just downright nasty! They are my favorite load to use on geese with occasional mallards dropping in!
Would certainly recommend them!

I was wondering about #1 shells and how they'd do for geese. I want to be able to take mallards with em at the same time, thanks for answering my question before I asked it.

I love to shoot steel #1's at ducks. I only use them on geese if I get caught without enough time to change loads. I like the T's a lot better on big geese.

My favorite load for the last 4 years is the 1 3/8 oz 1's load. Nothing, and I mean nothing gets by me the the first week of the seaon with this load. I don't know if it is the load, or all the summer sporting clays workouts, but I love this load. If I didn't say it enough, I love this load. Tink Toby Keith "I love this bar" tune when you say this. I can usually find these for about $8/box at Longs drug store in CA. Haven't found them many other places.
I suggest anyone that has any interest in becoming the most deadly duck killing machine in their state, try this load. I shoot a 20 yo Browning B80 (same as Baretta 303, then 390), usually IC choke early in the season, change to Mod about mid Dec. Try it and you might like it.
Hope this helps, and just my .02, but I love it, and buy it up when ever I can find it.

Duck Nut,
The Kent Fasteel seems to end up at Longs on sale most of the season. When I do find it on sale, I tend to buy plenty. Federal had some loads they were discontinuing, and had an awesome rebate program last fall. Rebate for 1st case of $20, rebate on 2nd case of $30 I think off the sale price of $50. I got my $70 rebate a month ago. Bottom line is I got the 2nd case for about $2.50/box.
A lot of the Waterfowl stores out here start having Fall Festivals next month, August. They typically have shells on sale then. See the link here to Autolife sale, they have a few Kent loads at $8/box. You might look around your area to try and find a similar type festival.

You might try Mack's as well. I believe they are the largest seller of Winchester shells in the Country, mostly via mail order??
Look for good prices, then buy in bulk! I typically have 5-6 flats of duck loads on hand, then seem to be lucky enough to find another sale just before running out.
Hope this helps.... and the link to Autolife festival not considered spaming on this forum.

Had shot #1's in 3.5" last year but was thinking of going to 3" this year - my trouble is: do I go with 1 1/4 oz or 1 1/8 oz.???
The velocity is 1450 vs 1550 - both #1's.

I kill tons of geese and only when it is very late in the season do I ever consider anything bigger than a #1. Early season, I usually have the first two shells as #2 and the last as a #1. Then as the season progresses, I usually end up with 2 #1's and a kicker BB in there for good measure.
I agree speed kills but so do a lot of pellets. I would rather have more pellets in the kill zone than just a few. Just my .02. Also, my wife shoots a 20 gauge and I try to get 1's for her as well. They are tough to find but they are out there. She kills lots of geese with that load.

Kirsch. i agree with you. I just do not know why the companys are not making many anymore. It looks like the 3 1/2 in # 1's are going away. I saw where Kent is still making them and that is great.
Do you think Kents have work out the waterproof thing yet? I hunted with a guy who shells got wet, had a bad time....
