I have shot about 60 patterns over the last year with my BGH 3.5 and a P*****str. choke. I have shot Win. Supreme 3.5 BB Win super X 3.5" T "Kent 3.5 BB and #1 and BBB and Federal Premium 3.5 BB. All of the loads except the "t's" shot in the high 70 to low 80% at 40 yds. on a 30" circle. The T shot is on the 88-92% at this range. Question is if I get even coverage with most of the sizes, Should I be using the "T's" because of the higher percent? The Win. X 3.5 in T has a velocity of 1300, the others are in the 1450-1500 range. Has anyone had the lower velocity loads pattern better with the P**str than the higher velocity? Thanks.

I might just be old fashioned in my outlook on things, but I'd use what drops 'em the best in the field.

Don't use them just because they have the best %. For decoying geese, I would go with the smaller shot. I'll bet 80% of T shot has less holes in the paper at 40 yards than 70% #1 shot. See the thread on #1 shot for geese. Lots of guys swear by them when shooting over decoys. I use 1-3/8 0z. #B shot @ 1575 fps and it flat out hammers them at 40 yards. My opinion is that pattern density (# of hits in 30" circle) is the key to clean kills not %. Try them all this season and see what one kills the best, it may be an eye opener!:uh: let us know what happens.

I am with QW on this one.

Hey QW,
Thanks for all the info on HS reloading. Any way you can PM that 1575 #B recipe?

Mucho Gracias!!!!!!!

Call'em N, that load is for a 10ga. You still want it? Let me know.

QW,
No use for a 10 gauge load, but thanks. If you ever come up with a B 12 gauge load that is 1460 + let me know.

QW what primer are you using and what hull?

Reelslick, I like the smaller #1's, for birds that are looking to decoy it will do the job with no problem. It is a great load and it is to bad it is getting harder to find..

CS this is an RSI load with a Win. primer in a remington hull. It is one of the few RSI loads that I get published velocites out of.

I use to use that load with a fed primer with bbb over b or 1 and it was a real killer. Stopped loading it because it was to hot for the rem hulls with a fed primer the brass expanded too much for my bps to eject. My hits were alsmost exactly the same duplexing as loading straight but alot more energy with the duplex.

I do believe the lower velocity will pattern better, the higher you go the more your pattern will get blown out. I find 1500fps is a good speed, it has decent hitting power and still patterns pretty good. Lots of guys like the stuff that gets up into the 1550 or 1575 and have luck with it, but I think if you were to take the same brand of shell and the same size shot and run it at different velocities (if it was possible to do this), the higher velocity shot would scatter more than the lower velocities!

As for the size of shot, that is a personal preference I think. I have buddies that kill geese with T and buddies that kill geese with number 4's. Personally, I think you need a good balance of pellet count and pellet size - therefore I tend to think BB and number 1's are good shot for geese.

Just my two cents!
