STUBBLE BUM

Some of you lads have asked me to show you my off season stubble project that I told you about a couple of years ago. This is by no means a comparable substitute to Killer Weed or Whoop Grass; just a cheap alternative to the do it your selfer. All you will need is some waste stubble from a harvested grain field and a bag full of 5 - 6 inch plastic cable ties. I went out and grabbed some grain last night from one of my farmers for a quick demo. If you do this make sure you knock the kernels out of the grain head just in case you get a visit in the field from an overzealous warden. The raw material:

I like to have my stubble bunches in varying sizes of 8 - 14 inches tall and I usually make 80 - 100 per blind. If your stubble is long you can put on two cable ties right off the bat as shown and make two bundles at once. Just trim off the excess cable with scissors and cut the bundles in two

I store mine in wooden boxes that I can put in/out of the box of the truck on the morning of the hunt - one box full will do one blind. Green plastic recyling boxes make great stubble boxes and you can pick them up at your Municipal Government Office for about $6.00 a pop

One box per blind - there will be spaces between the stubble that you can add material right from the field your hunting. Often we hunt stubble that has been seeded down with alfalfa or has lots of fox tail and timothy so you can fill in the gaps with it.

This is a Pro Guide blind that I'm using in the pics - by doing this you will save a minimum of 15 minutes a day in the field.

One last tip - if the stubble is still really yellow or wet let it sit outside on the back deck in the sun for a week or so and it will bleach out/dry out for you. Some of those stubble bundles are on their third season. Usually in the off season now I have to make about 100 new bundles to replace ones that have been lost in the field or have broken down. Hope you can use it - STUB
