Guys,
Been shooting federal Premium Sabot out of a rifled barrel 1100 - sucker is a tack driver, however - I am not getting the expansion once it hits the deer.
Anyone using anything else with good luck in there rifled slug barrel?
Have heard Brenekie (sp) came out with a new slug that suppose to be lights out.
Any suggestions would be apprecitated!

I always used remington copper solids out of my 1100 ..Seem to do the trick for me ,but seems like every gun likes 1 brand of bullet...

I agree with jezzolo, Lightfield are the wat to go if you want expantion. They will expand to the size of a half dollar. I get 2" groups at 100 yards with that slug.

What shotgun/barrel/slug combination do you feel is the best for accuracy...regardless of money or other factors.

FYI- I have a Mossberg 500 with a 24" rifled barrel that is a P.O.S.- I bought it when they first started talking about rifled slug barrels being the greatest thing in the deer world. I have tried the cheapo slugs as well as the high dollar ones. I also have tried scoped and iron sights....I have never...ever...been able to shoot consistent groups. Actually, I'm lucky to hit a paper plate at 50 yards!

Not bragging...just fyi...it's not the shooter...I'm a competitive pistol shooter, So... I am spoiled and demand accuracy.

I would like to get an accurate, consistent deer gun(slug) for this season and would like some input. I have pretty much all brands of shotguns---pumps and autos...so if need be...I could just as easily buy a new barrel for one of them. I would like to be "scoped" as well.

Thanks,
Darrell - aka - Q.S.

Quacker-Wacker and Jezz - heard the same about those lightfields - alot of guys have nothing to say but positive things about them. Was thinking of giving them a try along with the Remington copper solids and like I said probably the Brenekies.

Q-S - Going to make a long story short( after dumping 300+ of gunsmithing into my 1100) - a few of my buddies who are as serious about deer hunting as we are about goose swear by the bolt action slug guns. One who shoots a Savage couldn't hit the inside of a barn with this Ithica - is now getting such tight groups out past 100+ yards that its simpy amazing. My other buddy has a mossberg bolt and I personally seen that gun make consistent groups at 125+ yards on deer.
If I had to do it all over again - would have saved my 300 + bucks and just picked up one of those bolt action slub guns - but that's just my opinion.

I have a Browning A-bolt, and absolutely LOVE IT. I'm shootin Wincheser Supreme Gold Partitions and heart that the platimums are awsome as well. The Gold's only drop 4" at 200 yds!!! That's pretty hard 2 beat. Have been using them since they came out and havn't had a deer run over 20 yds. I think the bolt actions are the way to go, then you just need to find the load that fits that gun the most. Good Luck.

You got that right feetdown16. Same gun I had. I could not get those supremes to shoot out of mine. Just goes to show you that every gun is different. I now shoot a TC Encore .50 cal muzzleloader.

The TAR-HUNT bolt action slug gun from Bloomsburg, Pa. claims tobe the most accurate slug gun. I believe their web site is a link from Lightfield slugs web site. The gun also costs over 1200.00. I shoot a Winchester 1300 with a rifled barrel and it usually shoots about 4" groups at 100 yds., which I have since found out from the Lightfield people that 50 yds. is the correct distance to sight in a slug gun. Something about the wind having too much effect on the trajectory.

I shoot a Rem. 870 with a slug barrel. It has a a rifled choke. I shoot 3 in. Brenneke slugs and I can tell you they have dropped more deer in their tracks than not. The other deer when hit only in the vitals run til they bleed out. Amazing knock down power.

Interesting point you made on the slugs not expanding Bones. I have been using the same slugs out of the same gun ( not sure but I have been using the 3' version) and I thought they had all kinds of expansion on em'. The two deer I have killed in the past two years, both slugs came apart well.
My question to you is are you looking at just the base without those little rose pedal things on them. What I mean is if you look down the end of the slug with the hole in it ( out of the gun of coarse) the outside of the slug has little cuts in it which should open up on impact. My slugs after I dug them out were missing a couple of the pedals and just the base left. The other slug had blossomed as well but all 4 pedals were still intact. Are your slugs not expanding at all or are the pedals ripping right off. Just curious if you know.

Bones have you tried the Federal "Barnes Expanders" slugs?

After reading Wingshooter's reply and thinking that sounds real familiar, I had to and have another look at the box. Those are the babies that I've been using. Sorry if I steered you in the wrong direction but I will say those expander slugs have work well for me and they have all kinds of knock-down power.
