Well I called it in, sorta. I got up at 5am this morning and looked out the window into the hay field as I usually do and there is a coyote comming across the field toward my yard. So I grab my 17 HMR and get into the bedroom at the back of the house and open the window. He gets to about 100 yards out and then starts angling away from me. I grabbed my mouse squeeker which I keep on the window sill. I squeek it for about 5 seconds and he snaps his head up and heads straight for the opening in the hedge row to my yard. He gets to about 40 yards and stops. Then the snow plow starts comming down the road and he turns to see it and gives me a perfect broad side shot so I placed 20gr XTP right behind the shoulder. He goes about 15 yards jumping and spinning in a circle then hits the ground dead. The blood was about a 10' circle from where I shot him to where he went down. That 20gr XTP is tops in my book. Everyone seems to shoot the 17gr V-max but I think the 20gr XTP is far superior to the V-max on anything larger than a squirrel. Oh yea, I put her on the scale and she was right at 35lbs.

Sweet! That's a big dog to down with the 17HMR. Way to go on perfect shot placement. She looks like she's in great shape, and I'm sure that 17 didn't cause any fur damage!

Congratulations on a great lookin' 'yote.:TT: I hope I'm next!!:CL: :rf:

Great Job!!!! Whats the biggest coyotes you guys have ever weighed? I shot one last year with the shot gun that went 33 pounds, not huge but good healthy dog, good job though, gotta love hiding and calling from the bedroom!

I've shot two this year at 40 and 41 pounds - both males. We have big coyotes, as they are actually the "eastern coyote" which is a cross with the eastern brush wolf. Or, at least that is what I learned recently. Even the female I shot was 38 pounds.

Baron, my local taxidermist is a big time trapper and told me that a female that weighs 35lbs is a big one and he has seen males top the 50lbs mark.

Wow, from the bedroom. I can't imagine shooting one from the house. My in-laws live on a ranch/farm and I know they have shot a few by stepping a few feet out of the house and plugging them, but a window-job is even wilder. Great job. Pretty easy retrieve on that one.
