View Full Version : Meet the 870 Predator Hunter...

I took an Remington 870 Express Magnum, that had seen some hard use as a waterfowl gun. I did some modification and retooled it to fit my need as a close range (night time) coyote thumper. I cut the barrel down from 28 to 20 inches. I then Duracoated the barrel and action in OD green. I ordered an installed a camo adjustable stock from ATI. I installed a Hiviz Fiber optic sight to the front end. I am waiting on the reamer and tooling to put the screw in chokes back in it. It will in the future be carrying a Kick's Full extended turkey choke and spitting out 3" OO buck. I couldn't wait for that had to show off my creation! :TT:

Nicely done! Hopefully you'll bag a few with the "new" gun!

Great gun, I like 4 buck better than 00 for yotes.

That will be an ass slapper for sure, nice job!!! I also like #4 buck, does a nice job. Why 20" instead of 18". I ask only because I'm doing a 3" 870 express right now, but I'm putting a folding stock on it for home security, also extended mag. I am thinking laser sight also for home intruders. Anyone got any input??? Feel free I don't want to re-invent the wheel here.

My reasoning behind the 20" was "at first you don't succed cut it off and try it again". Was the real reason behind it. I may still cut it off to 18" but I want to do the reaming and tapping for the choke first. Atleast I will have 2" incase I screw up. A 20" barrel is plenty handy enough if'n you ask me. I will go with #4 after I go thru the 2 boxes of 00 that I bought. But Walmart doesn't carry it here.

Looks dead sexy! Nice work. I'd be interested to hear how the choke installation goes.....keep us posted!

When I'm chasing coyotes with my hounds I use an 870 also, but it's the super mag with 3 1/2" OO buckshot. It hasn't let me down in 15 attempts. It hits them like a sledge hammer. That is a nice pic of a great looking gun. Good Luck!

That makes good sense to me, good thinkin. I was going to just buy an 18" inch barrel with choke so I didn't have to cut mine. Thought I would just sell the stocks and barrel since I won't need them, someone is always looking for that stuff.

Cliff, Let me know when you go to sell your barrel. I need another barrel for another 870 project.

looks slick, if it kills as well as it looks my god you got yourself a sweet gun!

Lookin' great Chris. Could be the Turkey Hunter as well!

I have been pondering possibilities for a refinishing job on an old (very shiney) 20 ga o/u.There's little bluing left and I have done it repeatedly with rattle-can temp/removeable camo spray paint, but have tired of that routine. Any thoughts or advice on the Duracoat deal??

http://www.houtsenterprises.net/dur_easy.html Heres what I looked at. No real tips or tricks to it. Pretty easy to do if you have the equipment.
If I didn't have the equipment I would go with
Next time thats probably what I will do.

Here is a series of videos to guide you thru the gun kote process.

I am going to try my hand at fluting barrels here soon I have one more tool to get before I try it. When I get them finished rather then reblue'n them I am going to dura or gun kote them instead.
